The Knights competed hard but fell just short of Kenosha Tremper, 95-90, in a Southeast Conference dual on Jan. 10.

Oak Creek had a nonconference dual with Lake Geneva Badger on Jan. 12 postponed because of snow. The Knights will be at the Kenosha Bradford Invitational on Saturday.

"So close yet so far," said Knights coach Tom Fischer. "It was a great meet."

Oak Creek competed hard but had only three firsts against Tremper. Zach Dlugi won the 200 free (2:06.69) while Zack Kaestner claimed the 50 free (23.71). The 200 free relay of Dlugi, Kaestner, Andrew Rettmann and Adam Hock was also victorious (1:38.19).

"I am looking forward to pushing my 200 free relay team," said Fischer. "They rock."

Travis Harrison took a pair of seconds in the 100 butterfly (59.69) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.42).

The Falcons split two Woodland Conference games last week, beating Wauwatosa West, 63-46, on Friday and losing to powerful Pewaukee, 62-41, on Jan. 10.

Ashley Markowiak tallied 21 points against Tosa West, while Rachael Shulta netted a trio of 3-point field goals en route to 15 points and Elena Busalacchi added 10 points.

The going was tougher against Pewaukee, although Shulta scored 12 points, Ann Marie Bay eight and Markowiak six.

The Falcons (5-4 Woodland Conference, 8-5 overall) are off until Jan. 24, when they welcome New Berlin Eisenhower (10-0, 12-0).

Greendale/Greenfield

The Panther-Hawks swam to a 91-91 tie with Shorewood on Jan. 11 in what could be a preview of the Woodland Conference Championships at Greenfield on Feb. 4.

Greendale/Greenfield won seven races but could not offset Shorewood's depth.

"We are going to run into the same problem at conference," coach Dale Schrank said. "We will score well in a number of events, but the real test will be how many of our second and third-line swimmers will move into scoring positions in the top 16."

Rick Perez won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Adam Fleischhacker took the 50 freestyle, Shaun Fleischhacker the 100 freestyle and Wil Kivlin the diving, setting a school record with 209 points. Ross Rybakowicz and Shaun Lucchesi swam with both Fleischhackers and Perez to capture the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.

The Knights had a 33-30 lead going into the final two matches against Kenosha Tremper on Jan. 12 but lost both of the bouts by pin in falling to the Trojans in a critical Southeast dual, 42-33.

Jake Brycki had given the Knights a 33-30 lead with a pin at 285 pounds (3:00) but then both Alex Lechner at 103 and Henry Tran at 113 gave brave efforts but could not hold off their Tremper opponents.

The lead changed hands eight times and 10 bouts were decided by pin, including the final seven, four of which went Tremper's way.

Earning wins for Oak Creek were Seth LaBodda at 120 (5-1 decision), Jake Schmidt at 138 (pin 5:00), Don Maas at 145 (pin 145), Josh Regazzi at 182 (pin 3:00), Bryce Agg at 195 (pin 1:00), and Brycki.

What a difference a week makes.

The Sabers entered last week tied for the Southeast Conference lead with opportunities to even take outright control with games against Racine Case (7-0, 12-2) and Kenosha Tremper (4-3, 6-7).

But following a 44-43 upset loss to Tremper on Jan. 10, the Sabers ran out of gas at the end in a 43-37 defeat at the hands of Case on Friday.

Those twin defeats left the Sabers (5-2, 8-4) in a tie for second with Muskego (5-2, 8-4) as they prepare to host Kenosha Tremper (1-6, 1-10) on Friday.

Against the defending SEC champs from Case, the Sabers were tied at 18-all going into the third quarter, but then saw the Eagles outscore them, 18-9, making it 36-27 going into the fourth. Franklin began the final stanza with an 9-2 run to close the gap to 38-36, but a 3-point basket from Brette Logis gave Case the lead for good.

Morgan McCuen came off the bench to score 13 points for the Sabers while Cassidy Mihalko had 10.

Against Tremper, the Sabers had a five-point lead going into the fourth quarter but saw the Trojans rally and send it into overtime at 38-all.

Ariee Byrd had 18 points including a trio of 3-point field goals to lead the Trojans, while Jenny Eickhorst had 16 for Franklin.

Prior to their tough 53-49 loss to rival Muskego on Friday (see separate story), the Knights hammered a hapless Racine Horlick team, 58-20, on Jan. 10.

The Knights now sit in fourth place in the Southeast at 4-3 in league play and 9-4 overall.

Against the Rebels (0-7, 0-12), the Knights pitched a 12-0 shutout in the first quarter and then coasted from there.

A total of 10 players scored for Oak Creek, as Steph Kostowicz had 15 points to lead the way while Tamya Sims had 10, and Katie Finn and Rebecca Running contributed eight apiece.

The Knights struggled offensively last week, falling 44-34 on Jan. 10 to Racine Horlick and 42-39 to Muskego on Friday.

And the schedule does not get any easier, as Oak Creek will visit Southeast co-leader Racine Park (6-1, 11-2) on Jan. 20.

In the loss to Muskego (3-4, 4-9), Oak Creek (1-6, 4-8) were up 10-7 at the quarter and 22-18 at the half, but the Warriors, who have won four of their last five after starting 0-8, outscored the Knights 12-6 in the third to take a 30-28 lead.

Terrence Garner had 15 points for the Knights while Jonathan Breen 10 and Alex Medenwalt eight.

Against Horlick (4-3, 7-5), the Knights broke out to a 12-7 first quarter advantage, but were then outscored in every other quarter the rest of the way, including a 16-8 effort in the second session that gave Horlick a 23-20 advantage heading into the half.

Casey Magyar was the only player in double figures for Oak Creek with 10 points while Jonathan Breen had seven. The Knights had five 3-pointers in the game but were only one of three from the foul line.

The Falcons tallied 187 points to finish seventh in the Shorewood Invitational on Saturday.

Finishing fourth were Nick Bell in diving (271.55 points) and the 200 medley unit of Ben Hinson, Jake Hodel, Jack Larson and Nick Ratkowski (1 minute, 50.19 seconds). Coming in fifth were Hodel in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.56) and the 200 freestyle group of Larson, Ratkowski, David Monteilh and Hinson (1:35.78).

Hinson placed sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:02.03), Larson seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:01.26) and Ratkowski eighth in the 100 freestyle (53.07 seconds).
