School Board Academy scheduled for Dec. 10

Greendale - The school district is hosting a workshop from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at Highland View Elementary School, 5900 S. 51st St., for residents interested in learning more about district's operations and becoming a School Board candidate.

Those interested in registering for the School Board Academy should contact the district office, (414) 423-2700, Ext. 2702, by Dec. 8.

The academy will include presentations on student achievement, curriculum and instruction, finance, technology and student services. It will also include information about election procedures and the time commitment of board service. The five-member Greendale School Board will have two regular, three-year term positions on the spring ballot. To be on the ballot, candidates must submit the required paperwork by 5 p.m. Jan. 3. The spring election will be April 3; if a primary is necessary, it will be held Feb. 21.

Students holding toy drive to benefit Children's Hospital

Hales Corners - The Student Leadership Council at Hales Corners Elementary School is sponsoring a community toy drive Dec. 12 to 16 to benefit Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

New toys and arts and crafts supplies can be donated during school hours, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the school, 11319 W. Godsell Ave. The Student Leadership Council is a group of fifth-graders with an interest in attaining leadership skills via education and community outreach projects.

There is no age group or hospital unit specified. "It goes to the hospital in general," said Margaret Temple, a council adviser and fifth-grade teacher. "They distribute accordingly."

"They may use the supplies in their art room or craft room," she said. And stuffed animals are often used to comfort children recovering from surgery. But general toys are distributed to children following the drive for them to keep. The only requirement is that the toys be new, she added.
