Why are you running for office?

I feel called to continue serving the children and the community of Franklin. Official retirement from teaching has provided me the opportunity to serve in this capacity for the past three years. However, this is just getting my feet wet in terms of gaining complete knowledge of running a school district. The will, the time and the energy to commit to this task are there to faithfully grow into this service even more fully with a second term.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

I cannot say there is one outstanding issue in this race, but rather a complexity of issues. Each time we gather, we look at issues dealing with finance and budget, business administration, human services, administrative policy, governmental relations, curriculum, special needs services, personnel issues, disciplinary issues involving students, to name a few. Every board member must be prepared to deal with each issue at its level of importance. This complexity of service provides all of us with interesting challenges.

Why are you running for office?

Often, you'll hear School Board members say they run "for the kids." The fact is, Franklin School District hires a highly qualified administration and staff to provide our students an outstanding education. I'm of the opinion a board such as Franklin's, partially comprised of educators (and a spouse of an educator), presents as if looking through the wrong end of a telescope. My job is to serve the taxpayer by governing to ensure an exceptional education for our students, while overseeing your tax dollars.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

I see the upcoming 2012-13 budget as the most important issue in the district at this time. This goes hand in hand with the need for reduced spending and the anticipated rise of energy and insurance costs. Franklin has yet to see any changes to the health insurance plan for the district. Just over 79 percent of the budget goes toward employee salaries and benefits. We need a transparent budget where taxpayers understand how funds are allocated.

Don Petre

Age: 44

Address: 8050 S. 85th St.

Employer/ occupation: currently in my 23rd year as a teacher in Oak Creek

Education: Bachelor's degree in secondary education, University of Wisconsin-Madison; master's in administrative leadership, UW-Milwaukee

Related experience: member of Superintendent's Professional Staff Advisory Council; teacher mentor; OCEA treasurer; PBIS Steering Committee; McPherson College Instructor; Caterpillar STEM Academy Instructor

Political experience: none

Why are you running for office?

I was inspired by words that I heard at the funeral for our family friend Dick Bolender, late mayor of Oak Creek: "Quit complaining and do something about it." I wanted the Franklin School Board to have more members with a background in the field of education. I decided to do something about it. I will provide a broad range of knowledge and experience regarding school budgets, curriculum and business partnerships. I have the background and training needed for this position. I will be able to help the Franklin Public Schools meet the increasing demands of our 21st-century world.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

It is essential to improve our facilities in order to meet the current needs of the students, parents and our community. We need to provide our students with better classrooms, modern technology labs, improved athletic facilities and support for the fine arts. I travel locally and throughout the state watching my daughters' tournaments. I have seen too many communities with much better facilities than we have in Franklin. I look forward to helping the School Board make decisions regarding these improvements so that the entire community will benefit, not just the families with children in our schools.

Aimee R. Schlueter

Political experience: I was the vice president for the Country Dale Parent Teacher Organization. I also served two years on the Student Senate while attending Winona State University.

Why are you running for office?

I believe I could be an asset to our community. As a mother of two and a taxpayer, I have a vested interest in the children and our community. I feel this would be a perfect way for me to exercise my inner sense of justice on something that I find important and close to home.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

I feel there is no No. 1 issue as there are several issues and concerns that have come to my attention. One issue can and will directly affect other issues. I understand there are concerns about the possibility of the new building/addition referendum, state budget concerns and communication. I am interested in and look forward to tackling these and the many other issues with creativity and enthusiasm.

John Paul Thompson

Political experience: none

Contact: thompslj@wi.rr.com

Why are you running for office?

Because of my varied experiences, I feel I can bring fresh and differing viewpoints into the board. With my military experience, I am aware of the importance of budgets, teamwork and developing programs that best serve the people - students, parents, teachers, and the community as a whole. With the financial cuts in budgets and staffing, it is very important to maintain the high level of a well-rounded education for both teachers and students.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

Forming a cohesive board that has the best interests of the community at large, as well as the staff and students in mind to keep Franklin the best school system that it is.

Editor's note: A photo was not available from candidate.

Related experience: 33 years of industrial/manufacturing, engineering and continuous improvement

Political experience: three years as a Franklin School Board member, including one as treasurer

Contact: david.works@pw.utc.com

Why are you running for office?

I have been very active in the Franklin School District for over nine years. I have been a classroom volunteer, Science Committee chairman, and served as PTA president for two years. Currently, I am one of the most active volunteers for the district's technology program, including the Project Lead the Way, at the high school. It is my desire to use my professional knowledge along with my experience in various roles in the district to continue to improve the academic development of our children while continuing to bring in outside grants and successfully lowering operation expenses.

What's the No. 1 issue in this race?

The current state funding formula has provided major challenges to our school district that will require innovative methods and techniques in order to maintain the high quality of education that is essential for our students. With a successful career in private industry, I have had to lower operating costs while continuing to improve quality in order to maintain our competitive advantage.

  1. interesting they don't mention WEAC Treasurer under Don Petres profile? Don't vote for this guy unless you want higher taxes. He will be representing the union not the taxpayer. He'll talk a good game, but once elected "katie bar the door", he'll be voting with Dr. Patz and Debbie Larsen every single time.
  2. Petre had a "recall Walker" sign in his yard, but has since taken it down. What is he afraid of? i guess he doesn't stand for what he believes in. (or want us to know we will be paying higher taxes if he gets elected) His campaign signs don't follow the election guidelines either, but that must not matter to him. If he can't pay attention to details and have a regulation yard sign, how is he going to represent the taxpayers of Franklin appropriately?????
  3. Works was ousted from the school board by Franklin voters last time. Why would we want to recycle a board member who was nothing more than a rubber stamp for the Administrator and Board President.?
  4. Bialk seems to be a part time fiscally responsible board member. But, she generally toes the line for Dr. Patz and Debbie Larson.
  5. Went to the candidate public forum at Root River tonight. Conspicuously absent from this was Bialk, Petre, Works and Thompson. What's up with that? Are the union puppets boycotting the only public forum where they could get grilled by the taxpayers?

What are they hiding. The moderator said they sent invitations out on Jan. 23rd yet with several weeks notice these four folks couldn't be bothered to attend. That really shows how much they care for the average Franklin taxpayer.

Kudos to Aimee Schlueter and Janet Evans for coming out tonight and answering some tough questions from the public.
  6. I'd like to clear up two false statements that are made.
First, I do have the required disclaimer affixed to my yard signs.
Second, the "Recall Walker" sign has never been moved from its location in my yard.
I believe in what I stand for and know that I will represent the taxpayers well.

  7. Larsen and Traylor are out next year if not sooner.... this cozy little relationship with Dr. Patz has to end. I wonder if they were writing a report for Dr. Patz? Don't worry Janet, the taxpayers have your back.
  8. My spouse attended the forum at RR lanes. He told me about it. I logged on to this web site to read about the candidates and then I read the comments....I found the above comments extremely rude and disrespectful! Please show the proper respect for fellow citizens who have chosen to step into the public arena and run for office. Your crass, hurtful comments do nothing toward improving the Franklin School District and further divide us as a community.

    • @ KindnesAndDignity, As I look back at the comments" mine" included, I find no profane language or personal violent threats. What I do see is opinionated citizens. I believe I have a right to request and receive a answer from each of the 4 candidates who failed to show for the forum. How do I know who to truly vote for when they do not make themselves available to the general public for an open forum to answer questions. The questions asked were direct and simple, no tricks, no sneak attacks. These candidates must realize they left a very bad impression on the voters who did attend. Can you honestly say you or your spouse would not like to have heard the answers from other candidates. You never know, they may have changed my mined or somebody else's and voted for somebody who impressed me and reassured me that my interests will be truly represented by the people voted in. Thank-you for your concern and please keep involved in the future discussions this is what the voters no matter what "side you feel is right" must do to keep things going in a forward motion.
    • @KindnessAndDignity - Franklin Citizens are tired of candidates for School Board that give us no indication of how they will act and and how they will vote on School District issues. THIS TIME HAS ENDED.

If your husband was there, then he like I should have been appalled at the RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL behavior the 4 candidates that did not attend the forum.

You can go ahead and bury your head in the sand like many Franklin voters have in the past. But maybe, just maybe the Sleeping Giant of fed up voters in Franklin have been awaken.
    • @KindnessAndDignity... the only rude thing that has happened was the complete failure of four school board candidates to show any respect to the citizens of Franklin whom they would represent on the school board. Any candidate worth their body weight would have been there. I found the questions fair, the moderator unbiased and event quite informative.

The injustice was the no show by four candidates who have either stated or supported the teachers union over the taxpayers. Those four people have some explaining to do.
    • The ones that are doing the dividing are the ones who aren't doing what's in the best interests of the taxpayers and students of our city. When you make bad decisions or decisions that benefit the unions (removing Tom Reinke to name one) you will get called out on it from now on, we elected them, we need to hold them accountable for bad decisions and praise them for good ones. I sure hope you have the same words for all the unionista/lefties that are pounding on Scott Walker and want him recalled. (like Petre) It's time Franklin residents get their heads out of the sand and realize school board elections matter. Start informing your friends and neighbors.
  9. I was at the Candidate Forum Monday night... where were all the candidates? I only saw and heard two. Is there another Forum that those not in attendence think is better? When and where is it? These candidates need to be asked a lot of questions before we can vote for them. Well, there are only two that should get any votes on election day. Only two came to the forum and those are the only two that should get any votes. The others are missing in action... kind of sounds like the Democrats in Madison...
  10. Evens has shown us her fiscally conservative credentials in her current term as well as in her quest for more transparency in the process...she has my vote. Schuelter gets points for making herself available to the public and comes off as an average citezen looking to make a difference. Petre will be a pawn for WEAC and will raise our taxes at every turn, no way he'd ever get my vote. Bailk has an impressive resume as an educator but not sure we need another educator representing the taxpayers. Too many years on one side of the process tends to skew perspective. Don't know enough about Thompson yet but like his law enforcement and military credentials....presents him as a straight forward no nonsence kinda guy. David Works had a chance and was voted out for a reason......I'd like to see what some new blood can accomplish rather than going w/ a retread.
